Apprentice Ruby on winning rideSunday 20 August 2017
Apprentice Ruby Ride hopes she can continue her successful comeback by having her indentures extended.
She has ridden 110 winners of which 17 are in the city meaning she has some time to utilise her allowance.
She is due to complete her apprenticeship in November but will apply for an extension because of the months she was sidelined by injury.
Ride has made a remarkable comeback and rode a double at Doomben on Saturday on High Cost ($10) and Sweet Repeat ($51).
She has had a long struggle after being tossed from Zippity Zou during the pre-race parade at Ipswich in August 2015.
The horse trampled her causing an injury to her pelvis that doctors described as one of the worst of its type they had seen.
Doctors inserted 12 pins and three plates into Ride's pelvis and at one stage there was concern she might not walk properly again let alone ride.
"I spent six weeks on my back and it wasn't until about three months later that I was able to limp. It was a long way back to riding," Ride said.
"It was terrific to ride a double at Doomben and I hope to continue with more."
The comeback hasn't been all plain sailing as she was taken to hospital shortly after she returned to the saddle when her mount Red Magic collapsed and crashed through the inside rail at Doomben last month.
Fortunately, Ride was not seriously hurt.
